twitter

i'm really not sure i see the point of twitter. well, that's not true; i don't see how it applies to me. it's a great idea and i think it'd be awesome to know what my friends are doing at random times, but they don't have computer access and therefore wouldn't be able to twitter.

as for the library, i think twittering would have to be an internal thing if it were used at all (and i'm not sure there's a place for it). if we want to keep our public up to date with our goings-on, twittering doesn't seem like it would be the place to do it. a blog or website would be much more appropriate. internally, twitter could be used sort of like our email is now to keep us all abreat of the latest and greatest library news (such as the large type development). i really don't see how that would be any different than the email, which leads me to believe that twitter probably doesn't hav ea place in the library for business-related stuff.

i was pretty underwhelmed by twitter at first. bit by bit, a start to like it a little more all the time. some of it is simply finding it nice to see what people all around krl are doing - mostly small stuff - but it feels like maintaining connections, albeit it, brief ones.

but i've also seen some other ways people in libraries are beginning to use it - posting a link to a great website someone found; the first line from a new book; snippets from a conference. none of that is new - as you say, it can also be done via email. i think what twitter does that email doesn't are these things:
1) it can post directly to a blog or website; to cell phones; or as a feed on the twitter site - all similtaneously
2) you can develop a network both inside and outside of your organization. that could be other professionals, young people in a teen group, members of a book club, etc.

i know lots of folks dismiss it, in large part, because much of what gets posted is trivial. i must admit that i sort of like the fact that it can mix something trivial with something important, humor alongside things more substantial.
